“Research” in Motion?

We just got an interesting email that came through our inbox from our Presidio Matrix Corp executive that we interviewed a few days back about why he carries both an iPhone and a BlackBerry device.

We aren?t too sure if possibly he woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning or if he just has the proverbial ?thorn in his posterior?, but he seems to have gone off on a little rant about Research In Motion, even stating that their name is very appropriate.
Here is the email:

Okay, so I just got done viewing the webinar presentation for the new BlackBerry 4.1 Service Pack 5 Enterprise Server.

The information has been out for a good while now on what all it will include, but I figured I would log in anyways to see if any new information would be included.

HTML Email: Great
Free/Busy Lookup: Great
New Admin Features: Great

To the naked eye, it would appear that on the 29th when this new Service Pack is rolled out, it will be the monster to deal with.

Except for one thing.

Almost EVERY single one of these new features depend on the new 4.5 Handheld Operating System.
You know, ?The Operating System Formerly Known As 4.3?.
The Operating System that was SUPPOSED to be released by the end of the year.
The Operating System that then was SUPPOSED to be released by the middle of this month.
The Operating System that now appears won?t be ready until atleast WES.
Nice.

So at the end of the month, you will have a new Enterprise Server edition that is basically worthless to end-users, because RESEARCH In Motion is still working out the ?memory leak flaws? on the new Operating System.
Keep in mind, these ?memory leaks? have affected every version of Operating System since 4.2, so it?s not like RESEARCH In Motion hasn?t had an ample amount of time to be addressing this.

And for those of you who don?t think the memory leak is a ?big deal?, then you don?t use your BlackBerry enough, because trust me, it is.

And since we are on a rant here, how about the recent outages? Right about here is where I would link to the article that talks about the BlackBerry outages, however, well, you know why I am not?Um?Yeah?Too Many Of Them Recently!

The main thing that irks me about the outages is NOT that they happen. I understand that. Technology is prone to break, that?s one of the downfalls of it. However, I do have an issue of NOT KNOWING or NOT BEING INFORMED by RESEARCH In Motion when these outages DO occur, until they finally realize that it?s posted all over every BlackBerry related blog and forum on the internet, CNN.com, Reuters, etc.

It reminds me of a dog that I used to have that thought if he walked REALLY slow across the room, he was invisible and you couldn?t see him. In other words, it seems that RIM tries to intentionally AVOID releasing a statement saying ?Hey, um, just so you know, we are having problems up here in Canada, but just wanted to let you know we are working on it? until they actually have to buck up and face it.

Like I said, outages aren?t the END of the world for me, because (thankfully, knock on wood), it?s either BIS or BES that go down, and never really BOTH at the same time. What is unfortunate is when I am trying to tend to business, and I realize there is an outage, and I have to play a guessing game or go to BlackBerry Blogs to find out which email I need to be telling people to reach me at.

Look RIM, you have EVERYONE?S PIN number on file. How about you create a system that would allow people to sign up for an alert service based on their location (IE: North America, South America, Europe, etc) and their service type (BES/BIS/Both), and then when there IS an outage, shoot a PIN message (since those ALWAYS seem to work) to those devices letting us know.
Lookie there. Isn?t that easy? You know, for the right amount of money and a super-duper parka, I will pack up my things and head north of the border to come work for you.

Now, in closing, you probably noticed every time that I referred to Research In Motion, I wrote ?RESEARCH In Motion?, and that was purposely done.
RESEARCH In Motion is exactly what it seems they are at this point. It?s a good thing they didn?t name the company TECHNOLOGY IN MOTION.

And in closing, to the MobiShark Admin, I just noticed something in THIS POST?The review was an 8320 CURVE vs an iPhone? What are you doing posting a picture of an 8100 PEARL? Do you even really carry a BlackBerry? HAH!
Ok?Rant Off?I?m out?

Whew?So after all of that, what do YOU have to say about his rant. Is he correct? Does the name Research In Motion really fit the company?
