This post doesn?t include all instruction on how to configure your modem as a blackbery to a tee. let’s get started!

Some Reason as why you can’t get your Blackberry to work as a modem

1) Verify If you Blackberry Model is supported

Most all Blackberry models are supported.

Note: Nextel Blackberry Users that want to use their Nextel device Blackberry as a modem ** including some other carriers need to use The Shark Modem Blackberry application . Also if you?re on Telus Limited Data plan use Shark Modem

** Nextel Blackberry models that need Shark Modem : 7510, 7520, 7230, 7280, 7730, 7780, and 7100i

2) Blackberry modem drivers missing- How To: How to install Blackberry Modem Drivers

If you have installed BlackBerry Desktop the install should have included the drivers. You can verify to see if the files have been installed by going to this directory. C:\program files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Modem Drivers

If you are having problems with these drivers, uninstall, delete ALL files related to the RIM Blackberry Manager install, and then reinstall the latest version of BlackBerry Desktop Manager.

3) Making sure your modem driver are working - How To: verify your Blackberry Modem Drivers are working

On your Computer go to the Control Panel and then Phone & Modem Options. On the Modems tab, you should see ? Standard Modem on a new port (for example as COM2 ). Then Click Properties - Diagnostics - Query Modem. You should see then see the following:

AT+FCLASS=? COMMAND NOT SUPPORTED
AT#CLS=? COMMAND NOT SUPPORTED
AT+GCI? COMMAND NOT SUPPORTED
AT+GCI=? COMMAND NOT SUPPORTED

ATI2 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI3 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem

4) Important Step that Users forget to check ? How To: Disable IP Header Compression

 

Under Advance Options - TCP/IP Properties Make sure that you uncheck Use IP Header Compression.

5) Verifying if you Carrier requires APN settings.

Common Blackberry Modem Errors:

Error 692
This problem normally occurs when your blackberry can’t be recognized as a modem. This is a very common error and can be fixed easily with a little patience.

How to fix Error 692: Please ensure that you have followed all the necessary step in the setup process. If you have done this carefully the next step would be to install the latest Blackberry Desktop Manager and Handheld applications. With older versions of the Blackberry Desktop Manager and Handheld Application it lessens your chance perhaps in getting your Blackberry setup.
